U. S. Military Government
in Afghanistan & Iraq
How U. S. Pres. George W. Bush #43 missed his big chance for lasting peace
After U.S. & Allies had invaded & occupied the nations of Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003, President George W. was holding full power and was the de facto ruler, in conjunction with his Allies.
It was his big chance to impose military government over both countries, preventing the recent hasty, ill-advised withdrawal of Western armies from the two under-developed, unready nations.
Under the command of generals from the occupying U. S. and Alliance powers, emerging national armed forces would have been led to keep fighting any insurgents, & to develop in a disciplined way. With no interference from political parties, nor hampered by regional disputes, plans for international efforts to rebuild the infrastructure of the two nations would have been given the needed time to be put in operation. In Afghanistan, traditionally a land of orchards, these rich fruit-growing groves could have been replanted, protection being offered by Allied & native troops.
Military government under Gen. Lucius Clay ruled my original home country of Germany 1945-1949. Even today, U. S. forces are still maintaining military bases at Ramstein and elsewhere, indicating the country is still the subject of foreign occupation 75 years after the end of WWII which we lost.
Similarly, both Iraq & Afghanistan needed time, under long-term military governments, for inhabitant populations to slowly grow acquainted with law-abiding and orderly administrations, maturing toward a mentality that eventually might permit them to form democratic republics.
Under a similar concept in Iraq, a Coalition Provisional Authority was formed & ruled under Lt. Gen. Jay Garner & Ambassador L. Paul Bremer. But, the idea shortly was abandoned despairing of the mission, in view of chaotic riots & insurgencies, controls to stop the unrest not being carried through with sufficient persistence & vigor. Bremer then prematurely transferred authority to an inexperienced and divided Iraqi Government. In Afghanistan, Pres. Hamid Karzai led an ineffective national government until 1914, constantly under threats that U. S. and NATO troops would be leaving at an unspecified date.
